**Spoiler Alert for Meg 2: The Trench:**
The movie kicks off in the Cretaceous Period, where various creatures are hunting smaller animals. A T-Rex gets its sights on some tiny but fierce dino predators known as Snappers. Just then, the Meg bursts out of the water, takes a bite out of the T-Rex, and drags its bloody remains below the surface.
Fast forward to today, and we find Jonas Taylor (played by Jason Statham) popping out of a shipping container on a boat cruising through the Philippine Sea. He’s on a mission to stop some guys from dumping toxic waste into the ocean. After gathering intel, he takes down the bad guys and jumps into the water, where he’s rescued by Mac (Cliff Curtis) and Rigas (Melissanthi Mahut) in their helicopter.
At a marine research facility in China, Jiuming Zhang (Wu Jing) is testing an exo-suit designed for underwater work. He’s the uncle of Meiying (Sophia Cai) and brother to the late Suyin, with Jonas stepping in as a father figure for Meiying. They’re at an event hosted by Jiuming’s business partner, Hilary Driscoll (Sienna Guillory). Jiuming honors Suyin and their father, promising to keep their ocean research alive. He then introduces Haiqi, a captured Megalodon that seems to respond to his commands. Meanwhile, Jonas spots a shady character named Montes (Serigo Peris-Mencheta) watching him at the event.
